This week’s episode was pretty refreshing- rather than covering our usual news stories, we spent most of our time answering some questions from our listeners (that’s you). Please keep ‘em coming folks- we’d much rather try and help you out than blather about unimportant nonsense in our feed readers. Besides, if you ask enough questions we don’t have to read. Which is good. Because Rich never learned how.

Zach couldn’t make it tonight, but Rich and Martin open the show with a call to our listeners for more email questions and topic suggestions. After answering a listener question last week, we realized it would be nice to engage with all of you a little bit more. But not too much… I mean we don’t want to touch you or anything.
We also spend a little time talking about how we handle our connectivity and security while at Black Hat and Defcon, which happen to be next week.

Once again we have a wandering host; Rich has wandered off into the hinterlands of Denver (Boulder, I think) and is too busy to call in for the podcast. Left to their own devices, Zach and Martin muddle through tonight’s podcast without major mishap. We’ve got a little PCI, a little disclosure and some potential cracks in the Apple Store armor.

We went long tonight, really long. It’s episode 200 and while we didn’t plan anything, we did take a fair amount of time at the end of the show to discuss the show, how we’ve changed since the Network Security Podcast was created in 2005 and generally just natter on about security. Why not celebrate episode 200? Because the podcast’s 5 year anniversary is right around the corner and we’ll celebrate then.

We have an interview with Akamai CSO Andy Ellis this week, so we cut our coverage of the news a little short. Which is okay, since Zach was dialed in from Denver and Rich managed to catch some sort of virus (turns out macs may not get them, but Mac users sure do).

This episode is brought to you by the letter “P”. We start with a couple of articles about privacy (yes, mostly about Facebook), with a short segue on random security news, before closing with multiple articles on PCI. We went a little long tonight, but not nearly as long as we could have if all three hosts had really gotten going on privacy.

We start by addressing a little listener mail as we talk about how to get started in security for those of you leaving school and joining the work force. All of us started from really different backgrounds, so it is definitely an interesting question. From there we move on into the week’s security news, from Conficker, to Facebook, and hacking automobiles.

Zach and Martin had to do without Rich this week, since he’s on the road doing speaker type things and (hopefully) getting paid for it. Zach was on the road as well and Martin was heading out on the road, so things are a little rough around the edges. With any luck, we’ll have all three of us back on the podcast next week. Or at least have one of us at home with decent recording equipment.

First and foremost, our apologies. This episode went up about a week late (life gets in the way sometimes), and runs about ten minutes longer than usual. Rich and Martin took a break this go ’round, and I (Zach) steered the sheep. Once again joined by friend-of-the-show, James Arlen (a.k.a. Myrcurial), we spoke of James’ narrow escape from the “ash cloud” that blanketed Europe; the branding of “narcissistic vulnerability pimps”; and James’ kryptonite: “cyber warfare!” This episode’s another rough ‘n tumble one, but we’ll be back on track next week — and we’ve got a few things cookin’.
